Avoid Panic Attacks - Tips to Help You Cope with Panic Attacks

1. Skip Alcohol and Caffeine

One easy way to avoid panic attacks is to stop or severely limit your consumption of alcohol and caffeine. Alcohol, while you would think it would have a relaxing effect and reduce the instance of panic attacks, actually has been shown in clinical studies to make panic attacks worse. Caffeine though is a no-brainer since it is a stimulant, and it will magnify the effects of anxiety and panic. Caffeine consumption can greatly increase your odds of having a panic attack.

2. Get Plenty of Sleep

A panic attack is an unwarranted triggering of the "fight or flight response" designed to keep us safe in dangerous situations. One of the main controlling components of the fight or flight response is the adrenal system. A lack of sleep can make the adrenal system much more likely to trigger, thereby inducing a panic attack. Ever here the saying, "I am so tired I am running on pure adrenalin? There is some validity to that statement.

So, if you are looking to avoid panic attacks it would be a good idea to get plenty of sleep. Seven or eight hours should serve you just fine, maybe a bit more if you are younger. If you are having trouble sleeping, perhaps you might want to try one of the over the counter sleep aids, or see your doctor for something a bit stronger.

3. RELAX!

Anxiety and stress are major contributors to panic attacks. Just like lack of sleep, being under constant anxiety and stress stimulates the parts of your body that control the fight or flight response, and increase the possibility of a panic attack. If you are looking to avoid panic attacks, this is one area of your life you need to focus on.

So, how do you reduce anxiety and stress?

Well, that is not an easy question to answer. Everyone has differing levels of tolerance to stress, and they also have different "hot buttons" that cause them to become anxious or stressed. So, that means there are no easy answers that will fit every person. However, here are some general tips that will help you lower your everyday stress levels

  • Take a break when you are feeling stressed. Go for a walk or maybe do some other activity for a while
  • Take up a hobby. Finding something you enjoy doing can break up your day and give you something to keep your mind busy.
  • Practice deep breathing and stretching. Taking a few minutes a couple times a today to do some stretching and deep breathing exercises can do lots to reduce your stress level

4. Eat Right and Exercise

There is a lot of validity to the saying, "A healthy body breeds a healthy mind". Making the effort to eat a healthy diet and exercise for about 30 minutes a day can do wonders for your stress level. It will also make you feel happier, healthier and help you avoid panic attacks. You dont have to become a health nut, just follow a balanced diet avoiding all those things you know you shouldnt be eating, and then spend 30 minutes going for a brisk walk.

I hope these tips make a difference for you and help you avoid panic attacks. However, following these tips will not make your panic attacks go away completely, just help you reduce the likelihood of having one. In order to avoid panic attacks for good you need to get at the root cause so you can drive them away forever.

I suffered with panic attacks for 8 years trying all the various medications, therapy and hypnosis methods out there. Some of them didnt do anything. Some of them worked for a while, but then the panic attacks came back. Finally, in a moment of frustration I found a fast and easy method to drive them away for good.
